Travel Notes of Nan’ao Island: Cross-sea Bridge, Holiday Villas, Natural Gate and Food

Spent a surprise and wonderful holiday in Nan’ao Island, Chenghai City, Guangdong, China.

First of all, let me introduce the Nan’ao Sea-Crossing Bridge. This 11.08-kilometer-long bridge connects Chenghai and Nan’ao Island, and is one of the landmark buildings of Nan’ao Island. When I walked on the bridge, I felt the sea breeze blowing on my face, and the seascape and sky in front of me complemented each other. I couldn’t help but sigh what a wonderful moment it was.

After getting off the bridge, we came to Nan’ao Island. With clear sea water and fine sandy beaches, it is a good place for vacation. On the island, I lived in a homestay called “Nan’ao Island Holiday Villa”. The room here is clean and tidy, well-equipped, and there is a private pool, which made me feel unparalleled comfort and relaxation.

In addition to accommodation, Nan’ao Island has many attractions worth visiting. Among them, what impressed me the most was the “Gate of Nature” on the Tropic of Cancer. This arch built on the Tropic of Cancer gave me a wonderful experience of crossing the northern and southern hemispheres. In addition, Nan’ao Island National Forest Park and Ocean Park are also attractions not to be missed.

In Nan’ao Island, I also tasted local delicacies. Nan’ao seaweed is one of the specialties here. I tasted this delicious dish in a restaurant called “Nan’ao Island Seafood Food Stall”. In addition, the seafood here is also very fresh, which made me eat mouthful after mouthful.

Generally speaking, Nan’ao Island is a very suitable place for vacation and relaxation. Here, I feel the beauty of nature and the harmony between man and nature. If you also want a travel experience like this, you might as well come to Nan’ao Island to have a look!

Carnival Cruise passengers were left panicking after the ship began to heavily tilt during its journey, according to a report.

The ship tilted because of a technical error with the fin stabiliser which helps it to stay stable when traversing waves.

During the incident, guests experienced objects such as dining plates and bottles falling off tables and smashing when they hit the floor.

Many people onboard were said to be terrified about what was happening to the ship.

Passenger David Crews told News 6: “Plates and silverware started sliding off the tables. Then the tables themselves started to slide. Glasses and plates started to fall and shatter.

“At this point, it was pure chaos. Screams. Cries. Panic.”

Another passenger told the news website: “The starboard side literally felt like it lifted.”

A letter explaining what happened was later given to passengers, explaining the technical issue was “not a safety feature” and guests were always safe.

According to the news outlet, a number of passengers chose to fly home on the Tuesday after docking at Dominican Republic after the incident, instead of sailing until Friday.

“We remain confident of the safety of the ship as we are committed to the safety of our guests and crew.”

Another incident on a Carnival Cruise ship last year saw a couple find a hidden video camera in their bedroom on board a ship.

In October 2017, Chris and Dana White found the camera hidden behind their TV and was pointed at their bed during their three-day trip.

They claimed it was found switched on before it was dismantled by a crew member.

A Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson later told Express.co.uk: “After review by the ship’s technicians, it was determined that device was not connected to an electrical source and not capable of recording.

“Our security team turned the device over to the FBI for further inspection.”

Pound to euro exchange rate: GBP hits six month high thanks to optimistic Brexit news

The pound has boomed this week against the euro and succeeded in hitting a six month high as optimism concerning a Brexit deal helps sterling “retain the upper hand against the majors.”

A number of analysts have begun to make hawkish bets on a Brexit deal sparking a substantial rally in the pound.

James Athey, Money Manager at Aberdeen Standard Investments said: “A deal would mean the next two years would be under EU-equivalent conditions. It has the potential to trigger the sharpest appreciation in a long time.”

The European central bank (ECB) will be releasing an economic bulletin today, however, which could alter the exchange rate, experts have warned.

Sterling reaches 4-month high as Macron calls for a “Euro army”

The pound is currently trading at €1.148 against the euro, according to Bloomberg.

Laura Parsons, currency analyst at TorFX, spoke to Express.co.uk regarding the latest exchange rate figures.

“The pound retained the upper hand against the majors on Wednesday, holding above €1.145 against the euro and advancing all the way to $1.315 against a broadly weaker US dollar.

“However, if today’s economic bulletin from the European Central Bank (ECB) proves upbeat it could give the euro a little boost, taking the shine of GBP/EUR in the process.”

The pound hit a four month high on Tuesday. The increase in value against the euro came as Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab, 44, responded with a “thumbs up” when quizzed about the outcome of a crucial Brexit cabinet meeting at Downing Street.

Raab and other cabinet Brexit supporters are believed to be supporting the plan to quit any proposed Irish backstop with a few months notice.

After Raab was spotted leaving the meeting, BBC’s Political Editor Laura Kuenssberg tweeted: “‘Thumbs up’ – says Raab on his way out of cabinet.”

Over in Europe, French President Emmanuel Macron, 40, has annoyed euro investors by calling for the establishment of a “real European army.”

Macron said it was crucial to combat external threats – such as those from Russia, China and the USA – as well as threats closer to home.

The President told Europe 1 Radio: “We won’t protect Europeans if we don’t decide to have a real European army.

“We must have a Europe that can defend itself on its own without relying only on the United States.”

How to get the best exchange rate

Yesterday, markets mostly focused on the fallout from the US midterm elections.

Analysts predicted a split Congress could see the dollar fall further, with Democrat gain seen as a rejection of President Donald Trump and his policies which have boosted corporate growth.

Earlier losses were extended with the dollar now down 0.6 per cent against other major currencies as a new 12-day low.

Meanwhile, travellers heading to the airport should be aware of the clever trick some airports use to make passengers spend more money. With airport food and drink already being rather pricey, it comes as a shock for frequent fliers.

Dallas Fort Worth Airport in Texas installed new glass windows near some of their departure gates.

The “smart glass” filters out the sun, reducing the heat and the glare and making passengers more comfortable. Yet a side effect of this is passengers then spending more money on the food.

Last chance to live Thai life: Visit Bangkok’s most iconic hotel while you can | Beach Holidays | Travel | Express.co.uk

The Dusit Thani enjoys the perfect location in Bangkok (Image: Graham Caldwell)

For almost half a century, it has treated thousands of guests to the gracious hospitality only Thailand can offer, epitomising the warmth, kindness and charm of The Land of Smiles.

Sadly, however, not for much longer. This most exotic of hotels is closing its doors in January prior to demolition and a no doubt sumptuous rebuild.

Which means that you’ll have to be quick if you want to be one of the fortunates who has combined a visit to one of the world’s truly global cities with a stay at one of its great hotels.

The Dusit Thani, of course, offers more than charm and local colour. It’s a five-star property long beloved of royalty, statesmen and stars of stage and screen, so it has every facility you could desire: the Devarana Spa is possibly the most relaxing place on Earth and there’s a choice of eight restaurants and bars – offering everything from Vietnamese dishes and Cantonese cuisine to splendid steaks at Hamiltons.

Pride of place, though, goes to the incomparable Benjarong.

Many reckon Thai cuisine is the finest in the world… and that the very best of Thai cooking is to be found right here. Put it this way; when the late King fancied a Pad Thai or Tom Yum soup, he had the Benjarong on speed dial.

Accommodation, too, leaves you in no doubt where you are. The Dusit Thani’s 500-plus rooms ooze traditional elegance with their use of teakwood and silk. They’re well equipped too, Wi-Fi, walk-in showers, vast comfy beds, no detail is missing.

Opt for a Dusit Club room and you’ll not only get an adjoining sitting room, but access to the Lounge with breakfast, cold drinks, snacks, cocktails and canapés – and the service of Club staff who are on a personal mission to make your life bliss.

Not only can they help out with local excursions, airport check-ins or booking a table at a local restaurant, the moment the thought that another G&T might be a good idea pops into your head, they magically appear with an expectant smile. Having to look after yourself when you leave becomes a serious chore.

Not all the reasons to stay at the Dusit Thani lie behind its smoked-glass doors, however. There are other very fine hotels in Bangkok, but not one of them can match it for location.

Overlooking the huge, green and gorgeous Lumpini Park, it is a five-minute stroll from Patpong Night Market, where stalls selling local craftwork and “genuine fakes” rub shoulders with bars offering a taste of Bangkok’s more colourful nightlife.

The Dusit also has a Skytrain/MTR interchange literally on its doorstep. The city’s streets are notoriously jammed, day and night and, while there is sometimes no alternative to Bangkok’s, let’s say, somewhat mercenary, taxi and tuk-tuk drivers, access to public transport options is an air-conditioned blessing.

From Silom, take the MRT to Hua Lamphong for Chinatown with its astonishing street food, the glorious Temple of the Golden Buddha, and the raucous nightlife of backpacker Heaven, Khao San Road. Head in the opposite direction, to Sukhumvit, and you’re in the commercial heart of Bangkok with its plethora of malls, restaurants, bars and clubs.

More scenic is the Skytrain monorail. From Sala Daeng, adjoining the Dusit Thani, travel to Saphan Taksin to catch a river boat or taxi for a cooling scoot along the Chao Phraya to some of Bangkok’s unmissable attractions.

The beautiful Wat Arun, or Temple of Dawn (Image: Graham Caldwell)

The stunning and towering Wat Arun in Bangkok, or Temple of Dawn, is looking magnificent after renovations, while just across the river is the beautiful Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha), famous both for its 46-metre-long statue and as Thailand’s leading school of traditional massage. One stop further upriver is the huge and stunning Royal Palace. Be sure to dress modestly when visiting all of the above.

The ferry stop is also where you can hitch a lift to Asiatique. A combined night market/theme park with no shortage of eating options, it’s a sanitised version of the late lamented Suan Lum bazaar, but none the worse for that, and an excellent place to buy souvenirs.

Ride the Skytrain to National Stadium and you’ll be entering retail nirvana. First stop is that local institution, the MBK Centre: seven storeys of shops, stalls, and food courts where you can buy anything.

From here you can meander from air-conditioned mall to air-conditioned mall, but be sure to call in at Siam Paragon. Not only is there a fine selection of high-end fashion brands and High Street names, but the best food court in the whole of Asia.

Once you tire – and, this being Bangkok, you will tire – hop back on the monorail and you’ll soon be wrapped once more in the cooling embrace of the Dusit Thani.

Chill in your room, have a massage, enjoy a cold drink to the relaxing sound of the waterfall, or a coffee in the splendid Thai-Deco Lobby Lounge before plunging back outside to enjoy one of the world’s most exciting cities… or stay where you are – either way, it will be quite unforgettable.
